Although the name doesn't sound appetizing, this cocktail is believed to be concocted by none other than Fernand Petiot... remember the creator of the Bloody Mary?. You may have heard of a similar cocktail called the Greyhound which includes the same ingredients as the Salty Dog but lacks a salted rim. Therefore, just add a salted rim to the Greyhound and voila, you've got aptly named 'salty' dog.
